What's it like to live in Flagstaff?

I’ve been here for the greater part of 21 years now, grew up in Massachusetts and went to highschool in Gilbert. Flagstaff has a lot going for it…but for me the best reason to live here is how safe it feels. It’s not a big city but we still have access to a decent amount of shopping and culture- the trails are absolutely gorgeous - but overall it’s the location. During Sept 11 I remember thinking even if the entire country went to war we’d be reasonably safe on the mountain- I felt the same way during the depth of the pandemic. It’s the most liberal place in the state too so if you love Arizona but you vote blue it’s here or Tucson if you want to be surrounded by like minded people. Yes, rent is expensive but I’ve always felt it was worth it, myself. The crime rates are low, the community is close knit, and the locals are hip 😁 We also have great weed !

I don’t live there anymore but I went to NAU for half of my undergrad. I loved it! I lived near campus at hilltop townhomes which was such a cool place to live.

People were so chill and there was a definite sense of community. Joined a FB group (yes it was that long ago) back when I learned to snowboard and we’d alternate rides to get up to snowbowl at least 3 times a week. There were 3 bars everyone would go to (monsoons Collins and Maloneys) so by the end of the semester I felt like I knew everyone there.

Now as an adult who wouldn’t be too involved in the college scene idk if I’d love it as much.

I was originally born in England and moved to the states when I was 15. Ended up in Apache Junction because my mom’s work took her there. I can’t sugarcoat it, I hated living in AJ. I wanted to move as far away as possible when it came time to apply for colleges. I got a full ride to NAU, I accepted it because it made the most financial sense despite the fact that it was still in Arizona.

I totally fell in love and I wasn’t expecting to. While it’s sometimes harder to say now, it felt like a whole world away from Phoenix in 2010 when I moved here. I imagined I’d move away after college before moving here. I’m 30 now and I don’t really intend on leaving. I loved the downtown scene in my early 20s, now I love the nature around me and how centrally located Flagstaff is to accessing a whole bunch of different landscapes and cool places to see. I had a baby in 2021 and I’m so stoked to raise him here, we back up right to the forest and I’d of killed for so much space to explore as a kid. I love how Flag’s small enough that I regularly run into people I know, while still being large enough to have a pulse. Sometimes it’s a frustrating town to deal with, but I really love it here.
