I lived there for almost a year way way back in 1998. I lived in San Juan (Isla Verde) right near the El San Juan Hotel & Casino. The 1st morning I was woken up by the sound of helicopters flying around looking for the people responsible for bombing a local bar that was a 5 min walk from where I was staying. I think the place was called The Hideaway or something like that. I met so many beautiful people & had a blast. At some point, I moved to my boyfriend’s mom’s house in the Rain Forest. It was beautiful. I remember a certain road trip through the mountains en route to Rincon for the weekend. There was torrential down pour that whole weekend but I had fun anyway. I was in my mid 20’s and it was some of the best times of my life.

I have lived on the West Side of the island for a couple of years and it is amazing. As others have said, each area of the island is unique and will offer different experiences. North-East has the San Juan metropolitan area. South-East is where you will find El Yunque, the only rainforest in the United States. The North shore is known for surfing and amazing beaches. The South shore is mountainous with agricultural fields along the shore. The West has calm waters perfect for paddle boarding and fishing. The interior has it's own unique areas from coffee plantations to waterfalls. The island is only about 35 miles wide by 100 miles long which makes it easy to spend time in each area to get the feel of it.

It really depends on where. All of PR is not the same. San Juan is very cosmopolitan. I love Condado. Rincon, on the other hand, is almost rural. I love it there, too 🤷‍♂️. Just make sure wherever you choose has a generator for backup.
