Lawrence is an artsy, well-educated, moderately left-leaning city/town with a pretty strong (for Kansas) international flavor almost all due to the University of Kansas. If any of those things aren’t your bag, then steer clear of Lawrence. It truly is an arts-centric city with a thriving community of writers, a good cultural events scene, and more bands than you can shake a drumstick at. The student population, energy of an internationally renowned education institution, and pretty vibrant downtown (check out Mass St.) make this a diamond in the rough of Kansas. 

While the University hires a lot of folks, the overall job scene is not strong relative to other college cities that incubate and grow businesses that hire graduates and transplants. Better paying jobs tend to require commutes to Kansas City (about 40 miles), and while remote work is growing as a driver of the population, you’d hate to move here for that remote job and then get trapped without a local business scene.

Pros

Topeka/Lawrence/Johnson County is kind of like one big community for folks in Lawrence. It takes roughly as long to go from Fallbrook to 84th and Hwy 2 as it does to go from east Lawrence to Olathe. KC has much better entertainment options than the Lincoln/Omaha area.

Food is good, Lawrence still has a Runza if you're missing Nebraska. A little bit scandalous, but imo the non-top end take-out BBQ is about equivalent since the Lincoln folks are all from KC or run in the same circles. There's nothing quite like the experience of Gates, though. It's like a waffle house for burnt ends.

Being close to KC allows for all kinds of niche interests to support themselves where they wouldn't otherwise sustain themselves in a town as big as Lawrence (it's about the size of Tri-Cities). The hobby groups and social clubs are closer in participation and prevalence to Lincoln than they have any right to be.

Weather is ~3-5 degrees warmer most of the year and the frost/winter definitely feels shorter. Incredibly active backyard gardening community, especially in east Lawrence.

As with most cities Downtown is the starting point for young professionals looking for a place to live. First of all it is one of the most beautiful historic districts in the country with most of the original buildings preserved and converted into cool loft and condo living. That means you can walk to the thriving local social scene on Mass St. and even walk to work if you should be so lucky to have your office downtown.

Lawrence is one of many cities in the U.S. that is divided into geographical sections. East Lawrence is a good choice if you’re young-ish and looking to have one foot in a social scene and one foot in a slightly more mature setting. The are is the center of the Arts Scene with plenty of yard art, murals and the Warehouse Arts District, which is filled with boutique restaurants, art galleries and some of the startup scene. The housing options here are also cool with Victorians, bungalows, cottages and an emerging new green building scene.

Pros: Close to KC; if you like bars, hiking and KU basketball, there's that. The food is generally pretty good, though a lot of places are overrated. It's LGBTQ friendly. The new leaders of our police and sheriff's departments put a premium on mental health and getting ridbof bad LEOs.

Cons: Rent's expensive; if you buy, taxes are expensive; the schools aren't that great; our DA is incompetent; a lot of attitudes here are obnoxious. Get used to everyone bleating and beating their chests about "LFK!" (Lawrence fucking Kansas! We're so awesome! Woooo!)

The thing about this place is it's been cool for a long time and even though it has all the problems of a growing town and especially a University Town, there is so much originality here in the Lawrence experience that even if you're new, if you stay for a while and engage with it you will reap the benefits of that. There is so much institutional knowledge here really. And it's mostly good.

Colorado’s appeal is multilayered. Of course, there are the Rockies—snow-capped peaks, ski resorts, and Instagrammable vistas—but beyond the obvious, the state reveals itself in its micro-regions and quirks.

Neighborhoods like RiNo and Cap Hill pulse with murals, independent bookstores, and some of the best third-wave coffee west of the Mississippi.
