Most people can imagine that Laramie is a beautiful city/town surrounded by some of the country’s greatest skiing, fly-fishing, camping, and hiking. What may surprise you, though, is how much the University of Wyoming trickles down from the U through high school, elementary school, and Kindergarten and creates a great academic environment throughout the city. Not unusual for a college town, but when you mix in the Laramie Mountains, the Rocky Mountains, and the nearby Vedauwoo recreation area, this is an unbeatable combination. 

So it snows from September through May- and it sometimes also falls in June, July, or August. If that doesn’t bug you, then you’ll do just fine here. A bright side to all this snow, though, is sunshine. It’s sunny nearly every day here, so perhaps even if you do hate the cold and snow, you’ll enjoy all the vitamin D.

Top Three Things To Do In Laramie:

1. You are close to two mountain ranges, one of which is among the most beautiful places in the American Rockies. Skiing, hiking, mountain biking, etc. are all within a 45 minute drive. World class trout fishing is nearby, and you can fish in the Laramie River as it flows through the town’s greenway.

2. The bars are great if you like no nonsense, fun bars full of college aged coeds. The beer is cheap and the mixed drinks are strong. There is never a line to get into a bar.

3. The University of Wyoming offers learning, entertainment and cultural opportunities with solid performers coming through town. Mix that with a local scene of music and arts and for a small city there’s a fair bit to do here.

Lifestyle 

The University is really the only major professional game in town. Once you get beyond the U you’re either in the service sector or in one of the small engineering/environmental consulting groups. Since a lot of the newcomers to Laramie are presumably remote workforce refugees this probably won’t matter much to those considering a move here.


Worklife

If you watch the show Yellowstone or have heard about all the western towns that have been overrun with Californians over the last few years then you know the populations and housing prices have already exploded in towns from Boulder to Boise. Laramie feels way on the early side of any of that kind of movement. In Laramie you get the Dutton family (again, see Yellowstone) western vibe combined with college town energy but without the heavy influx of Californians. What’s not to like?

I actually like it a lot. I’m super outdoorsy, there’s access to so many awesome places in Laramie that’ll keep you busy for a couple years. People are so nice it’s almost weird. Cowboy stuff is fun. The summers are immaculate bc it’s dry and not that hot.

Winters are long and can be depressing.

But I actually think that’s what gives Laramie it’s unique vibe. We’re a town of 30k in the middle of beautiful Wyoming, weather is rough, the summer is incredible, people are great. It’s a party boat in the middle of the universe.

Laramie is a tale of two cities. In the summer the city is quiet as the college students have all bolted for home. Come fall things pick up and get more energized but without too much of the ballyhoo of some college towns. Another thing to know about Laramie is that approximately 50% of the people here rent their homes. Some of that is a byproduct of the college residents and some of that is the blue collar working community that can’t afford the somewhat expensive housing prices by Wyoming standards. 

The city is primarily made up of bedroom neighborhoods with 3 and 4 bedroom homes dominant and apartment complexes throughout, available for college and other renters.

Laramie has a small young professional population that in many cases works at the U. In many cases they also live in the historic district south of campus which has both apartment and housing options. Rentals abound in Laramie so relatively easy for a young professional to afford living here.

Much of the University population lives on campus but surrounding apartment complexes in the City Center and Historic District south of campus also hold some of them as well. Given the high percentage of rentals in Laramie it is a pretty inexpensive place for college kids off-campus with plenty of low-priced apartment complexes for rentals.

Most of the neighborhoods outside of Downtown and the Historic District have suburban vibes with multiple-bedrooms and yards galore. The school district is excellent so this is a great place to get your start and have enough to raise the little ones or maintain the lifestyle of the bigger ones.

I would second this. I came here to go to UW in 2007 and have been here ever since. But as many people have mentioned it's hard to find a decent paying job with the cost of living here, I struggled for years and over two years finally found a great job at UW. But that's basically where you'll find most of the higher paying jobs because UW basically sets the standard for Laramie unfortunately. But I do love how unique it is here and that's why I decided to stay and I was a Navy brat and moved all over the country. This has been my favorite place to live

I have lived in Laramie and Cheyenne and enjoyed both. It's hard to say which would be better for you without knowing much about you. But here are how I see them:

Laramie is very much a college town. The people out and about skew a little younger and most things to do revolve around the college, like sporting events, concerts, plays, stuff like that. Laramie is closer to the Snowies and the ski area to the west, and still close to the outdoor recreation opportunities at the summit and Curt Gowdy. Because it's a college town, I think it leans a little more liberal as far as politics goes, but it is still Wyoming.

Cheyenne is the "big city" of Wyoming. So there are a lot more shops to go to, and events going on. It has a decent live music scene thanks to a new music venue and a nice civic center that has concerts, comedy shows, and plays/musicals pretty regularly. There are also a lot of good, free concerts during the summer. It's further to the big mountains, but close to Curt Gowdy and Vedauwoo for hiking and biking. Cheyenne also has a lot of nice parks and amenities like the Botanic Gardens, Aquatic Center, and the Ice and Events Center, and a robust Greenway system for biking around town.

As an adult, I prefer Cheyenne due to just having more to go do. But Laramie is great too. Fort Collins is also awesome, but it is more expensive and to a Wyoming native, has a lot of people.

I totally second this opinion for the Laramie summers alone. I couldn't tell you why I feel like this, but I've always had such an animosity towards Cheyenne. It has a much more industrial/grungy feeling to it that puts me on edge, I couldn't even imagine that plus the dreariness winter carries with it. The wind may not be as bad as Laramie, but unless you've lived through an extended period of wyoming wind, the difference will be marginal.

Laramie summers are on par with some of the best conditions in the lower 48. I don't think it even broke 90⁰F last summer, and the wind dies down considerably from mid-May to mid-September.

Having said all of that, unless you and your husband/wife are into outdoor recreation (hunting, fishing, hiking, mtn. biking, etc.), you may really struggle with being in Southern Wyoming long term. I hated it here for the first year and a half before I started ice fishing, which has been a game changer on the cabin fever that run rampant around March/April when the temperatures swing from the mid 70's to mid 20's. Also no state income tax is really nice.

Colorado’s appeal is multilayered. Of course, there are the Rockies—snow-capped peaks, ski resorts, and Instagrammable vistas—but beyond the obvious, the state reveals itself in its micro-regions and quirks.

Neighborhoods like RiNo and Cap Hill pulse with murals, independent bookstores, and some of the best third-wave coffee west of the Mississippi. Yet, 20 minutes outside the city, you’ll find Golden, a once-sleepy brewery town now thriving with young families, hikers, and mountain bikers—all while still housing Coors’ giant facility.

Boulder, perched between rugged wilderness and intellectual ambition, is equal parts Patagonia fleece and startup pitch decks. It’s home to Naropa University (the country’s only accredited Buddhist-inspired school) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, reflecting the state’s unique mix of spiritual curiosity and scientific rigor.

To the north, Fort Collins flies a little under the radar but boasts Colorado State University, a jumping historic downtown, and enough breweries to rival cities twice its size. Meanwhile, Colorado Springs feels like a different state altogether—home to multiple military installations, it leans more conservative but surprises visitors with epic natural landmarks like Garden of the Gods and the quirky artist enclave Manitou Springs, where mineral springs bubble out of old-timey fountains.

Then there are the mountain towns that get less attention than Aspen or Vail:

- Salida: An artsy river town known for whitewater festivals and a historic downtown dotted with galleries.
