It's an interesting place. If you have a child/want children, think carefully about where you will live and do your due diligence. School district attendance zones are very strict; we are in the zone for Kennedy high which, for some reason, is the armpit high school in the area. Terrible funding, terrible facilities. All the other schools are much larger and more modern, and none of them allow transfers because of all the Kennedy high refugees trying to escape to them. Schools are highly rated, but underfunded (at least our zone is) and teach to the test. It's all about drilling and a British education.

Everybody here is correct about drivers. "Student Driver" stickers everywhere, and people just wandering from lane to lane. And, when they run red lights, they REALLY run red lights. Think, one-one thousand, two-one thousand, ZOOM. Never "go" immediately when your light turns green.

Lots of great hikes, centrally located - 'cheaper' than the peninsula, but prices quickly rising.

I have live in Fremont for 30 years. I raised my family here. I live in the Niles district where we have a lot of open space, great parks and if you like to go out for runs, it has it all, trails, hills and all very safe. The schools are great. Property appraises faster than other places, close to Silicon valley, San Francisco. The worst? When my kids reached that age, they said it was a boring city, no night life, but hey San Francisco is only 40 minutes away. I love living in Fremont.

In case you don't know this already, the good news is that it's equidistant from North Bay (San Francisco), South Bay (San Jose), and Peninsula (Palo Alto and around) so it's easy to go everywhere the action is. The bad news is that you're better off going to those places for activities since Fremont doesn't have as much to offer in the activities a typical 20yo might be interested in. It's a great place to live and as long as you have a car, you're good.
