In a recent analysis of U.S. cities that qualify as “boomtowns,” Denton finished number 2 among 500 different cities ranked. Based on positive trends in employment, new business, population growth, and household income, Denton kind of has it all in a reasonably sized package. A college town with a smashing music scene, it also has affordable housing with outsized average incomes and falling unemployment rates. 

Denton is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, and if someone tells you that doesn’t carry any headaches with it, we’d say they’re crooked as a barrel of fish hooks (Texas saying). Born and raised in Denton, but have spent the last 10 years since graduating college in Dallas. Although Dallas is not exactly a world-class city, I've been able to enjoy so much of the local music and art scene, great food, museums, etc. But finding friends and a community in the city has always come up a little bare.

Currently have a new job opportunity in Denton, as well as a newborn child which my parents would love to spend more time with. So my wife and I find ourselves at a crossroads deciding if we should move back up. I always look back fondly at my time there, having been where I met so many wonderful people, but is the community in Denton still there and able to offer what a young family needs/wants? Or is it just nostalgia?

Things I love about Denton: Local music, more involvement in local goods/stores, more family friends, easier to engage in community efforts, some beautiful and affordable neighborhoods

I lived in Denton off and on for the past decade. It honestly where I would prefer to be. I'm originally from Norman, OK and Denton has a lot of the same vibes. As someone who eats a plant-based diet, the food situation has vastly improved since I lived here in 2017. There are definitely more options than there used to be! It sucks that the local Sprouts is in Hickory Creek, but it's worth the drive. I love the Winco (is it the Murder Winco now?) and I love the lore surrounding all the Krogers in town! All of my friends and band mates live here.

Maybe you should take a mini-vacation to Denton. Stay a weekend. Or maybe a long weekend. Find some cool stuff to do, and check out a restaurant you haven't been to. During that time, you may feel like you're "home" like I did, or you realize you were just feeling nostalgia. Nostalgia makes everything seem better than it is/was. It's good to dip your toes in the creek and see if the water is truly nice or not.

There's a fairly active music scene. Downtown has a ton of places to eat and drink. If you're at UNT, Fry Street is gonna be a great place for you.

A lot depends on your vibes. Denton is a bit more chill, but there's something for just about everyone. Just gotta know how to do some looking. During the school year, there are more activities. Summer tends to be more chill and laid back.

I’ve lived all over Denton. A lot will depend on price range and some other specifics you desire.

If cost is not an issue, there’s an area on the South side of town off Southridge which is gorgeous. Big trees, parks nearby, really nice homes and neighborhood. Prolly in the $375 - $500+ range. Also near there you could check on Montecito Rd, similar homes.

North side of town there are really nice homes in Nottingham Woods neighborhood. May find something less than $350k.

A lot of cheaper homes are going to be sub divisions with HOAs, which may or may not work for you.
