Best Neighborhoods in Chesapeake, Virginia

Chesapeake doesn't have one obvious downtown that defines the whole city. Historic South Norfolk brings older streets and redevelopment close to the Norfolk line. Dock Landing is more residential, with mature trees and a neighborhood feel. Elsewhere, Chesapeake spreads into newer subdivisions and open spaces that make it feel very different from its urban neighbors.

That space comes with tradeoffs. A quiet street may mean a longer drive for work or dinner, and crossing the region's bridges and tunnels can change a commute dramatically. In older South Norfolk, examine the condition of the individual property rather than assuming redevelopment has reached every block. Waterfront or low-lying addresses also deserve a careful flood-risk and insurance check.

Young Professionals

Historic South Norfolk is the closest thing to a young professional in Chesapeake. Redevelopment projects, those in the past and those planned make it an increasingly cool spot for youngsters as a result of newer loft apartments and condos, office and retail space, and planned commercial district. Chesapeake is largely suburban so this is your best bet if are looking for on area on the rise for youngsters.
