I was born in Texas an hour west of Houston, but lived most of my life in NC. I've been in the Carrboro/Chapel Hill area for about 15 years now after taking a job at UNC. I really enjoy it and have no plans to move anytime soon as I will likely retire from UNC in another 15+ years. My commute is like 10 minutes to work, there are lots of great places to eat, it has been a great place to have my kids go through the city school district, I've made lots of friends and have a pretty active social life, etc. It definitely isn't as big as Houston, so if you want something more like that then Durham or Raleigh might be more interesting to you. But I went from suburbs of Houston to rural eastern NC for close to a decade until I went to college at NCSU in Raleigh, so Chapel Hill and Carrboro are both smaller towns but still have good variety of things to do, are relatively close to even bigger cities, and in general people I get along quite well with here.

University City is the neighborhood that surrounds UNC’s 1,000 acres and where the great majority of students off-campus live. There are three mini neighborhoods within University City that have their own vibe and are right and wrong depending on your preferences. University Place is the most popular part of the neighborhood due to its heavy concentration of restaurants, bars, shopping and entertainment options. The whole area is filled with apartment buildings, and homes for rent for undergrads and graduate students. Pretty much everything is a walk or bike ride from school but there is also a good bus system for getting everyone to classes. While most students are in the city proper some graduate students also end up in neighboring Carrboro, a pretty groovy smaller town that gives them some distance from the madness of campus life.

Downtown Chapel Hill is the center of the universe for Young Professionals that move here. There are plenty of apartments for rent as well as condos and small homes if that apartment lifestyle isn’t your thing. More important, Main Street, that runs through the area has over 95 restaurants, bars, cafes and music venues, most independently owned. It’s also where a lot of the startup scene in Chapel Hill happens, so for some being here is not only a walk to play but also a walk to work. Any of the neighborhoods that surround Downtown, including the three Historic districts can also work although most will still walk here to socialize.

The Historic Districts of Chapel Hill are beautiful and some families get ahold of one of these magnificent homes and hunker down. You can walk to the Franklin Street shops and restaurants and just luxuriate in the century old vibe. There are nearby frats and sororities though so there is a tradeoff being that close to the University. Newer neighborhoods, like Governor’s Village, Meadowmint and Southern Village are also great options for families. Each of these areas has both great homes, blocks and kid play areas as well as small shopping and restaurant districts. Chapel Hill neighborhoods work hard to recreate the small southern town vibe in their own blocks.

I personally like living in Chapel Hill. The biggest pro is that our house backs up to great walking trails and closer to our work. I live at the edge of CH, so not too bad to get on Fordham to Durham or hop on 40. I would not want to live in the center or CH. The cons is high property taxes. However, I think I would prob suggest Durham. There are a lot of young couples and families, and a lot to do. Housing is no longer cheap in Durham ( it used to be in certain neighborhoods), but more affordable than CH with lower tax rates.

Also originally from Colorado. Not a college student, but mid-30s. I didn't expect to love it here as much as I do. Parts of Carrboro and Chapel Hill are walkable, but definitely not as much as a city would be. I suppose it depends on what "walkable" means to you.

There are many indoor/outdoor things to do, depending on your interests. The geography is obviously very different from out west, but there is a lot of great hiking and trails to be found out here.

There's already been some good advice here, but as a fellow former Coloradan, I'm giving my endorsement.

My husband and I live "in" Chapel Hill, but on the south side, in Chatham County, not Orange County. It takes us less than 15 minutes to be in downtown Chapel Hill around the University, but this area is more affordable than being in Chapel Hill proper. As with most places, housing prices have gone up here as well, but we still pay lower taxes than Orange County and no city taxes There are lots of defined neighborhoods in this area, and those are walkable if you just enjoy taking walks (I do), however to get most places you'll need a car. There is a park and ride nearby, and when my husband worked at UNC, he'd take the bus to work each day. As others have said, about the only truly walkable area, where you can just leave your car and go multiple places is around Franklin St or Carrboro. My husband came from TX and I came from Asheville via TN. We both love it here and really don't want to move anywhere else!
