Because of its location, Augusta has the perfect mix of southern and east coast weather. They don’t get the snowy, cold winter weather other East Coast cities get and the summers are nice and warm. It’s true, you’ll hear people complain about the humidity, which can be brutal in June and July. People moving from cities further south will tell you it’s nothing compared to their hometown, while others coming from up north will tell you they left to get away from the harsh harsh winters. Because of the coastal location and the great weather, there are plenty of outdoor events to enjoy like kayaking, boating, and fishing, as well as biking on the many trails around the city!

Here's a nice summary from a transplant about their pov on Augusta: *When I first moved here over a decade ago I hated it (came here from Atlanta so there was a big adjustment), but now I'm settled in and raising a family here. It has changed a lot and there are some nice areas.*

If you talk to anyone who’s lived in Augusta for any length of time, they’ll tell you “It’s a great place to raise kids!” But outside of young or established families, you might find Augusta a bit lacking. The city is trying hard to expand and bring in more restaurants, activities, etc. but they still have a ways to go. Young professionals looking to jumpstart their careers in tech or medical might have a bit of a hard time adjusting, especially if they’re moving from neighboring Atlanta.

It was an AMAZING apartment complex. Nice neighbors, we met a couple from NY who we grew to be close to. Keep in mind Evans is a predominantly white, middle - upper middle class area. My very black husband and I faced snarky racist comments while grocery shopping on the regular. If you’re white you’ll be fine in that area.

Contrary to other comments we found the food in Augusta to be great. I’m originally from NY so I’m a big fan for culturally diverse food. Sawasdee for Thai, Persis for Indian, Timbuktu for African (cant remember which country), Humanitree is black owned and vegan I do believe. Lots of nice local coffee shops. Mirin is pretty good Asian fusion and there’s a super authentic kbbq spot that was really good.

The river walk is fun. They have some hiking and biking trails. Oh and kayaking rentals down the river. Every single festival we attended was fun. Check out market Saturdays down town if you’re into that. Also surprisingly diverse.

All in all it is what you make it and what you’re looking for. Definitely hidden gems if you search for them.

Move to the city now while you're younger.

The majority of young people graduating will also be migrating to large cities, not places like Augusta. So everyone is in a similar boat of meeting new people and exploring a new place.

I would not worry about home values for now. The housing market is crazy even with high interest rates. Also, moving to a HCOL area USUALLY means salaries are higher. Median household income in Atl is roughly 70k whereas Augusta is 46k.

Atlanta is only 2 hours away. You could see your family every weekend if you really needed to.

I've lived here in Augusta a total of 27 years. Augusta itself is nice, in spite of the morons on city council. I'd definitely recommend living in Columbia Cty as opposed to Richmond Cty. The property taxes are higher there, but the cost of living will still be way cheaper than NY. Sure, there's more exciting places to live.... but there are much, MUCH worse places out there too. Centrally located, in less than 3 ¹/2 hours, you can be in Atl, Charlotte, Savannah, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, or the Georgia mountains (I recommend Helen). Anyone that says there's nothing to do IN Augusta really hasn't looked, or they're a boring whiner that probably just misses the last place they lived.
